Phil Ivey made a shocking misstep on last night's ESPN WSOP coverage and mucked a winning hand. (Image Courtesy Main Pot Poker)
For anyone who watched the WSOP on ESPN last night there was one hand that stood out among all the others, when Phil Ivey mucked the winning hand.
It started with Ivey betting preflop with 8s-8d. Everyone folded except Jordan Smith who made raised Ivey to 1 million with Ad-9c. Both players checked the flop, turn and river which came 5s-Qh-10s-Qs-As. Ivey then waited for Smith to show. Smith showed his ace and Ivey begrudgingly mucked his rivered flush!
Obviously he made a simple mistake and mistook his 8s for an 8c, but what a mistake to make! When you’re down to a couple dozen people in the richest poker tournament on the planet and you’re playing for a pot of more than 2 million chips and four spades are on the board, isn’t it worth a second glance at your black card?
It was generally a bad day for Ivey who couldn’t seem to catch a break and bled chips in several large pots.
But of course, as we all know, Ivey survived and will go on to be among the November Nine. Those who didn’t survive last night’s coverage included the last woman standing, Leo Margets, who finished in 27th place and cashing for $352,832.
The last pre-taped ESPN WSOP coverage airs next Tuesday. After that, it’s down to the quasi-live November Nine Coverage which will air the evening of November 10. Cake bloggers will be in Vegas so covering the Final Table so be sure to check back for actual LIVE updates so you can spoil it for all your friends who are waiting to watch the ESPN coverage
